WIth Star Wars, there's nothing worse than the Christmas special. There's almost no incentive to just being nice, or thinking something isn't very good, but just being nice about it. The incentives of the internet are to be the biggest asshole with the hottest take that you're allowed to get away with, and that's what gets the most internet bucks (whether that's real money, clout, attention, etc). Yeah, I think it's pretty much the internet that's ruined everything. Look at how the studio validated their bullshit with TRoS. So yeah, I can believe that SW fans are some of the worst. Say what you will about Marvel, but they do keep expanding the world and bring in new characters that aren't just tied to the OG6 Avengers. I've gotten impressions from fans of the novels that those actually did try to expand the world in interesting ways. The world never seems to grow much, either. Star Wars fandom is so toxic that even the idea of engaging in new material related to it makes me feel exhausted. TRoS not only shat on that, but also sidelines characters like Rose to appease the toxic fanbase, which was super gross.
That's what got me interested starting with episode 7. It wasn't perfect, but I like the whole theme of anyone having the potential to be a hero. I knew this guy was a huge SW fan, but man, that was disappointing. He dropped all of the usual braindead fanboy stuff, claiming that TRoS was a return to what the franchise should be. Not long after that, a good friend of mine who I've always had a fair amount of respect for went on a total fanboy rant on Facebook (back when I still used it). My sister and I made a habit of going to watch the sequel trilogy when we were visiting family for Christmas break.
